Bosch to End "Charge My EV" Charging Service by March 2025 Due to Market Challenges

Bosch has announced that it will discontinue its "Charge My EV" charging service by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The company informed its customers via email, stating that the service will cease on March 31, 2025. Bosch highlighted the highly competitive market and slower-than-expected growth as the reasons behind the decision to exit the charging services sector. As a result, all user contracts for the 'Charge My EV' app will be terminated on that date.

From April 1, 2025, customers will no longer be able to access the charging service, meaning they will be unable to log in, charge, or pay for any services, and their data will no longer be accessible. Additionally, RFID charging cards will be deactivated. Bosch also confirmed that users' personal data would be deleted within two months, unless it is needed for legal retention requirements, such as invoicing and accounting purposes.

Bosch had entered into a charging partnership with Lotus, the Geely-owned electric vehicle brand, in January 2024. This collaboration granted Lotus customers access to over 600,000 public charging stations across Europe. Bosch had also partnered with Maserati, part of Stellantis, in 2023. With the discontinuation of the 'Charge My EV' service, these partners will likely need to find alternative charging providers.

The move to discontinue the service comes amid broader restructuring efforts by Bosch. In November 2024, the company announced plans to cut 5,500 jobs globally, with significant reductions in areas such as assistance systems, autonomous driving, and production of electric motors. While these plans are still in progress, Bosch's decision to scale back operations aligns with its focus on more profitable and strategic business areas.

When a product is identified as potentially hazardous or has already caused safety or environmental issues, the CPSC quickly issues a recall notice in collaboration with manufacturers and distributors. Recently, ChargerLAB learned that myCharge charger posed fire and burn hazards, leading to a recall requirement from the CPSC.

myCharge Recalls POWER HUB ALL-In-One Portable Chargers Due to Fire and Burn Hazards; Sold Exclusively at Costco

Costco, the largest membership warehouse club in the United States, became the third-largest retailer in the U.S. and ninth-largest globally in 2009. Since its founding, Costco has been committed to providing members with high-quality brand products at the lowest possible prices.

On June 20th, the CPSC announced on its website that myCharge POWER HUB ALL-In-One Portable Chargers, sold exclusively at Costco, could overheat during charging, posing fire and burn hazards. The recall involves approximately 567,000 units. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled portable chargers and contact myCharge for a free replacement.

The recall covers myCharge POWER HUB ALL-In-One 10000mAh Portable Chargers with model numbers AO10FK-A, AO10FK-B, and AO10FK-C. These products are black, have foldable prongs, and can charge mobile devices. They come with a USB-C cable and a Lightning cable, with the "myCharge" logo printed on the product's surface.

The production date is printed near the prongs of the portable charger. Consumers can verify whether their product is at risk based on this date. The production date is in the format WWYY, where WW represents the week number and YY the last two digits of the year. This recall includes products with date codes ending in 21 or 22, or the following four date codes ending in 23: 0123, 0923, 1523, or 1723.

These products were sold exclusively in U.S. Costco stores and on Costco.com from January 2022 to November 2023, priced around $40. To date, there have been 120 reports of the portable charger overheating. myCharge received five incident reports, including two residential fires, with reported property damage amounting to approximately $165,000. Costco received 115 returns of the portable charger, citing issues such as melting, swelling, smoking, catching fire, burning, exploding, or sparking. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Note: Recalled lithium-ion batteries should be disposed of according to local and state laws, and follow the procedures set by municipal recycling centers for damaged/defective/recalled lithium batteries. These potentially hazardous batteries must be handled differently from other batteries. Do not dispose of the recalled batteries in trash cans. Do not place these recalled batteries in retail and home improvement store battery recycling bins.

The product from AOHAI is an intelligent charger capable of both charging and discharging.

CE-LINK

CE-LINK also introduced a new EV charger.

The EV charger showcased by CE-LINK appears sleek and minimalist, with a black and white color scheme. The charging port and cable connections are black, while the main body of the EV charger is white. A small display on the charging box provides charging information.

At the event, we witnessed SCHAEFFLER demonstrating an "unusual" method of lifting the rear of a vehicle for charging.

Star Charge

In the Star Charge exhibition area, there are multiple EV chargers on display.

A phone booth-like EV charger was spotted, featuring a retro design with a modern black-and-white color contrast.

This EV charger also comes in a version with a display, allowing users to browse information such as charging power, enhancing the user experience.

Both of these EV chargers are compact, occupying minimal space. The curved surface on top effectively shields against rainwater, making them suitable for placement in communities.

A home power solution capable of powering the installed EV charger was also observed.

Star Charge also showcased several charging stations.

The charging station resembles equipment found at traditional gas stations, and it is expected that such charging stations will be seen at highway service areas in the future.

The charging station measures over 7 feet in height and accommodates 2 EV chargers, capable of simultaneously charging multiple vehicles.

Green strip indicator lights are present on top of the EV chargers, and an LCD screen displays information specific to each EV charger.

We also witnessed a robotic arm autonomously charging EVs, demonstrating how future technology can free up hands.

YADEA

At CES 2024, we encountered YADEA, a Chinese electric bicycle brand.

USB-C is COMING! | Apple's Wonderlust iPhone 15 Event Scheduled for September 12th

Yesterday, Apple's official website updated its "Apple Events" section, announcing the highly anticipated tech event - the Apple Fall Event scheduled for September 12th. During this event, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series.

The iPhone 15 series has been generating excitement for the past six months. Apart from the well-known transition to USB-C ports, what other highlights can we expect in terms of cables, battery capacity, and charging?

iPhone 15 Series Switches to USB-C Ports with Two Transfer Speeds

For most users, the most significant change in the iPhone 15 series is the transition from the long-standing Lightning port to the more universal USB-C port. This shift means that the entire iPhone 15 series will embrace USB-C, making accessories more universal. Users won't need different accessories for different devices, resulting in a more streamlined setup.

Additionally, the iPhone 15 series will feature ports with two bandwidths: high-speed and low-speed. Entry-level models will continue to use USB 2.0 (480Mbps) low-speed ports, while high-end models (such as the Pro) will introduce high-bandwidth ports. This addition of high-speed ports will allow the iPhone 15 to function as a personal smart terminal, easily connecting to high-speed docking stations through a "one cable to rule them all" and providing convenient access to all peripherals, charging, and high-resolution screen projection, among other sweet features.

Colorful USB-C Cables with Enhanced Braiding

Accompanying the port change is a modification to the cables. The iPhone 15 series will come with USB-C cables in various colors, including black, white, yellow, orange, and blue, likely matching the corresponding iPhone models' colors. The cable's winding method has also been altered from the previous circular card reel to an oval-shaped winding style.

Moreover, the cable length has been extended to 1.5 meters, providing a wider radius of use. In terms of performance, the standard cable does not include an E-marker chip, allowing a maximum power transmission of 20V3A (60W) and supporting a data bandwidth of USB 2.0 (480Mbps).

5000mAhBattery Capacity Increases Again, Approaching 5000mAh

With each iPhone generation, battery life has improved, not only due to processor advancements but also thanks to larger battery capacities. According to MacRumors, the iPhone 15 series will feature the highest battery capacity specifications in Apple's phone history, with the highest capacity nearing 5000mAh.

Specifically, the iPhone 15 will have a 3,877mAh battery, the iPhone 15 Plus 4,912mAh, the iPhone 15 Pro 3,650mAh, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max 4,852mAh. Compared to the iPhone 14 series, all four models will see significant capacity increases. Coupled with the energy efficiency improvements from the new A17 processor, the iPhone 15 series is expected to deliver impressive battery life.

Charging Power Increase? Still Uncertain

Since the iPhone 8, Apple has supported the USB PD universal fast charging standard. With each new iPhone iteration, the charging power has seen incremental increases. It started with the iPhone 8's 12W PD and reached 27W PD with the iPhone 14 Pro.

Previously, iPhones used a "pure PD" charging solution, where the voltage level negotiated was 9V 3A PDO, resulting in a power limit of 9x3=27W. Unlike some Android phones that use charge pump technology and the PPS protocol to adjust voltage efficiently for high-power fast charging, iPhones did not employ this method.

Whether the iPhone 15 series will upgrade its fast charging power and technology remains unknown.

Still No Charger Included

For a long time, iPhones came with a 5W charger, even for models like the iPhone 8, which supported PD fast charging. It wasn't until the release of the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max that Apple included a USB PD fast charger in the package. Surprisingly, these two models were the only iPhones to include a PD charger.

Starting with the iPhone 12 series in 2020, Apple no longer includes chargers in the box. Apple stated that there are currently 2 billion Apple chargers in the world. This move helps reduce waste caused by unused accessories, makes iPhone packaging smaller for more efficient storage and transportation, and cuts over 2 million tons of carbon emissions annually. Of course, Apple's motives for this decision are well understood.

Considering that the iPhone 15 series is transitioning to USB-C ports, it's likely that Apple will continue its policy of not including chargers.

The accompanying cables will also switch to USB-C and come in a variety of durable braided colors, likely matching the iPhone models' colors. Enhanced Performance, Safety, and Durability for The New Plus Series

In 2016, Hello Tech's Jackery brand entered the global portable energy storage market and has since iterated and upgraded various product lines. In June of this year, Hello Tech introduced the Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus Portable Power Station at the Intersolar Europe in Germany, the world's largest and most influential solar energy trade show.

APEC 2022 will return to Houston on March

Because of the COVID outbreak, APEC 2021 had to be held online. But this year, it can finally resume to an in-person format in Houston from March 20th to 24th, 2022.

The Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) is not just a designer’s conference. It has something of interest for anyone involved in power electronics and will focus on the practical and applied aspects of the power electronics business.

Activity

This year’s meeting will be held at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center. If you’re an attendee, you’ll have many chances to participate in different activities in five days, such as professional education seminars, exposition, social events, spouse activities, and four different sessions.
