How to Update

To update the firmware of ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C PD3.1 tester, you need to operate with the PC software.

After connecting the tester to PC software, you need to click the "Update Firmware" in the user interface.

If a firmware can be updated, there will be a prompt in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware." As the image above, the part in the red frame means that ChargerLAB has already launched the updated firmware at this time.

Then click on the "Chip Icon" in the red frame to update.

After clicking on it, the PC software will erase the old firmware and write the new one. The whole process is almost done in a blink of an eye, very convenient. 

And if you don't see anthing in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware," you can always click the big + icon above it to update. You can find all the firmware files from Google Drive.

Simply select the corresponding local firmware.

Introduction

Recently, many users have reported that their ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C does not work when powered on in certain situations, except for a flashing line at the edge. This indicates that the KM003C is in recovery mode. Today, we will provide a brief introduction and guide you on how to exit this mode.

Before we begin, it is advisable to understand or review the functions of each port and button for easier operation.

1 USB-C Male

Standard USB-C Male (Plug)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

2 USB-C Female

Standard USB-C Female (Receptacle)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

3 HID

Used to connect to PC & Power Supply and it’s driver-free.

PC software: support Windows / Mac OS (In development), used for upgrading firmware, drawing high-precision curves, loading offline curve files, PD protocol analyzer, triggering fast charging protocol, etc.

4 Back

1. Rotate the display direction in the main menu

3. Press and hold it when power off, you can enter the DFU mode

Release CC pull-down resistor, it'll shut down after 5 seconds

Keep CC pull-down resistor, enter the charging protocol

Recovery Mode

The recovery mode is similar to the one on Android and iPhone devices; it is used to fix the tester when an update fails.

As shown in the gif, when you hold the back button while powering the tester, it will force the device into recovery mode. There are two solutions to this.

Method 1: Disconnect the KM003C, then plug it back into the charger after it has completely powered off. This should restore normal operation. If it doesn't exit recovery mode after re-plugging, use the following method.

Method 2: Connect to a computer via the HID port and use the PC software to recover.

Open the POWER-Z KM003C PC software on your computer, double-click your KM003C in the top left corner to enter the operation interface; then click "update firmware" on the right side and choose the latest firmware to upgrade. This completes the firmware upgrade.

At this point, the current upgrade progress will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the device. After the upgrade is complete, it will switch to the startup interface, indicating a successful recovery, and the device can be used normally.

Introduction

Although our ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C cannot directly measure the exact power during wireless charging, it can provide a rough estimate. How does it do that? Today, we'll use MagSafe as an example to explain. Additionally, we plan to launch a new product by the end of 2024 that can accurately and precisely record wireless charging data. Stay tuned!

Test

Today, we will use the following devices: an Apple 15W MagSafe charger, an Apple 61W charger, and, of course, the POWER-Z KM003C.

First, connect the male plug of the KM003C to the USB-C port of the charger.

Then, connect the MagSafe charger to the output end.

Finally, connect it to the phone. You can see that the output power is 8.95V 2.11A 18.92W. Considering the loss in wireless charging, this is normal.

Record the Charging Data With PC (Online)

After installing the APP on the computer, connect the tester to the computer through the built-in HID port. After opening the APP, you will see the picture above. The red area shows the number of testers connected to the computer, and the yellow area shows the specific data changes detected by each tester.

In the red box, click the icon in the yellow box and the APP starts to record the charging data.

After that, you can see the voltage and current. By clicking the "POWER" option in the red box on the top toolbar, you can also see the power data, clearly and straightforwardly.

After recording, you can click this icon to perform more actions.

Introduction

Over a year ago, we demonstrated how to use the ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C to record charging data online. While this method is the quickest, it requires a PC to do so. However, you can also record the data offline on the tester and import it to your PC later on. How can this be done? Today, we will show you.

Testing Steps

Using the POWER-Z KM003C to record data involves just three steps:

1. Connect the power source (power bank, charger, etc.).
2. Connect the load.
3. Create a new record.

For this test, we're going to use the following equipment: Anker PD3.1 140W power bank, P240 (as the load), and KM003C.

Step 1: Connect the Power Source

First, connect the male plug of the KM003C to the power bank.

Step 2: Connect the Load

Next, connect it to the load to start discharging.

Step 3: Create a New Record

Go to the data storage page and create a new data record.

Set any desired output voltage and current values on the P240 to record the data in real-time.

Import to PC

After completing the data recording, you need to use our POWER-Z PC software to import the data. This allows you to plot curves and facilitate data analysis.

Step 1: Connect the Software

Download the software on your computer, then connect the tester's HID port to the computer.

Once you open the app, you'll see the interface. You will also notice a green option box for KM003C on the left side, indicating a successful connection. Double-click to open it. The left area shows the number of testers connected to the computer, with a maximum of 32 devices.

Once opened, you can see the changes in charging data here. The top section shows specific values for voltage, current, and power, while the bottom section is the time axis for the charging curve. The right side is the operation interface.

Step 2: Import Data

Next, click the "Offline Data" option in the red box to import the data.

The latest data will be displayed at the bottom.

Double-click the data to view the detailed charging curve on your PC.

After that, you can click this icon to perform more actions.

Here are all options.

Export

After clicking Export, the system will provide two file types.

You can choose the file starting with SQLite or CSV. We mainly introduce the CSV.

Then, you can see the saved EXCEL file in the saved path.

Open it to view the specific charging data.

In addition to saving in CSV format, it can also be saved in a format beginning with SQLite, but this method is more complicated, we will only do a brief introduction.

The file name is called mySQL.db. You need a specific database management system called MySQL to open it. Those who are interested can download it by themselves.

How to Update

To update the firmware of ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C PD3.1 tester, you need to operate with the PC software.

After connecting the tester to PC software, you need to click the "Update Firmware" in the user interface.

If a firmware can be updated, there will be a prompt in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware." As the image above, the part in the red frame means that ChargerLAB has already launched the updated firmware at this time.

Then click on the "Chip Icon" in the red frame to update.

After clicking on it, the PC software will erase the old firmware and write the new one. The whole process is almost done in a blink of an eye, very convenient. 

And if you don't see anthing in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware," you can always click the big + icon above it to update. You can find all the firmware files from Google Drive.

Simply select the corresponding local firmware.

Introduction

Today ChargerLAB will introduce the common functions of the POWER-Z KM003C, so that you can have a clearer understanding of this tester.

Let’s first take a look at the functions and uses of each port and button. Many users confuse the ports, making it impossible to test.

1. USB-C Male: Standard USB-C Male (Plug)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

2. USB-C Female: Standard USB-C Female (Receptacle)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

3. HID: Used to connect to PC & Power Supply and it’s driver-free.

PC software: support Window / Mac OS (In development), used for upgrading firmware, drawing high-precision curves, loading offline curve files, PD protocol analyzer, triggering fast charging protocol, etc.

4. Back: 

(1) Rotate the display direction in the main menu 

(2) Back 

(3) Press and hold it when power off, you can enter the DFU mode

5. Confirm button: 

(1) Long press: Enter Settings 

(2) Short press: Confirm

6. Left button: 

(1) Switch four different interfaces in the main menu 

(2) Modify parameter values in the setting

7. Right button: 

(1) Switch four different interfaces in the main menu

(3) Long press "Right" on startup when HID is disconnected to power (Flip the USB-C connector if it doesn't work). Release CC pull-down resistor, it'll shut down after 5 seconds. Keep CC pull-down resistor, enter the charging protocol

First: Charging Info Test

Steps: Plug and play.

Here is the Dash Board. Voltage, current, and power are from top to bottom. The lower left corner shows the charging protocol that may be in use.

Short pressing the confirm button on this page can switch the refresh rate between 4sps, 15sps, 60sps, and 1Ksps.

Second: Real-time Charging Curve

Steps: press the Right button to go to the Real-time Curve.

You can observe real-time data curves here. Press the Confirm button to switch between VBUS/IBUS, D+/D-, CC1/CC2.

Third: Protocol Test

After entering the "Charging protocol", select "Be ready!", and then select "Auto detection". The tester will read the information of the tested charger. It can support FCP, SCP, AFC, QC3.0, QC4+, QC5, PD3.1, PD3.0, PPS, Apple2.4A, VOOC, SVOOC, VIFC, UFCS, etc.

Warning: Please disconnect any device connected to another port before using this function, the high voltage may burn your device.

Fourth: Cable Simulation 

Another interesting function inside the "Charging protocol" is that you can simulate different cables. Select the button to the right of "Be ready!". 

Then you can choose the cable specifications you want to simulate. It can help you test protocols even if you don't have the corresponding cables.

Fifth: Protocol Trigger

Steps: "Application"-"Charging protocol"

This feature can trigger the needed protocol and adjust to a specific voltage. For this specific feature, it supports PD2.0, PPS, EPR, QC2.0, QC3.0, AFC, FCP, SCP, VIFC, UFCS, and VOOC protocols. The original cable is required when triggering the VOOC/SVOOC protocol, and the KM002C needs to be equipped with a small load.

Warning: Please disconnect any device connected to another port before using this function, the high voltage may burn your device.

Sixth: VBUS Ripple Test

Steps: "Application"-"Modules"-"VBUS Ripple"

It can detect VBUS ripple. Use the "Left" and "Right" buttons to switch the sample rate between 20.0k 1250μs to 8.0M 3μs.

Seventh: E-marker Cable Test

Steps: "Application"-"Modules"-"USB-C eMarker"

It can test if your USB-C cable has an E-marker chip. By reading the E-marker chip information inside the cable, you can obtain the maximum power, transfer speed, and other information.

Eighth: Apple Charger SN Code Reading

Steps: "Application"-"Modules"-"Apple charger"

Each Apple charger has its own SN code. Specifically, if the SN codes are consistent in the charger, cable, and port, then it is an official Apple product.

Ninth: Data Storage

Steps: Press the Left button to go to the Data Storage page, and press the Confirm button.

It can independently record data and store it inside. You can view data and export it as a chart in the PC Software.

Tenth: The PC Software

The PC software is very powerful. It includes data reading, recording, and exporting, as well as protocol trigger, adjusting voltage, PD protocol test, updating the firmware of the tester, and other functions. It can connect multiple testers at once, theoretically, there is no limit on the number. Introduction

As we all know, our ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C/KM002C testers support fast charging protocol detection, allowing users to achieve this functionality with a few simple steps. Now, the question arises: Is it possible to achieve this feature more conveniently on a PC? The answer is, indeed, yes. Our testers support OTA (Over-The-Air) upgrades, and in the recent firmware update, we've added a trigger function specifically for various protocols in the PC software. This enhancement improves the ease of testing. In this article, we'll provide a detailed step-by-step guide for using this new feature.

Operation Guide

First, update POWER-Z KM003C firmware to version 1.7.9 or higher. We got a PD 3.1 140W charger, our own P240 power supply, and a PC to do the test.

Device Connection

Connect KM003C to the power source (charger) and the load device (P240 electronic load, smartphone, tablet, etc.) via the included HID port using a USB-C cable. The POWER-Z software enables real-time operation.

Step 1: Open PC Software

Run the PC software on your computer. You'll see the KM003C option box on the left, indicating a successful connection to the tester. Double-click to open it. The left area displays the number of connected testers, while the right side shows specific values for voltage, current, and power. The middle section has data curves, a time axis at the bottom, and a menu on the far right for setting start/stop conditions, sampling rate, and cache depth.

After upgrading to the new firmware, you need to click the red menu button in the top right corner, and then click the pop-up yellow charger icon to access this new feature.

Step 2: Tester Connection

Once the menu is open, you'll notice a switch icon in the upper-left corner.

After turning on the switch, click the yellow icon on the right side of the menu to trigger the protocol, ensuring the safety of the charging device and preventing damage.

After connecting the tester, the PC software displays supported fast charging protocols: PD, UFCS, QC2.0/3.0, FCP, SCP, AFC, VFCP, SFCP, etc., allowing you to trigger voltage and current for the corresponding protocols.

Step 3: Protocol Trigger

After completing all connection steps, you can perform protocol triggering.

PD

Click the "Power Delivery" option to enter the voltage and current value selection menu for this protocol.

You'll see the various supported values for PD3.1, with the highest being 28V 5A.

Click the corresponding voltage and current value, and the left display will show the voltage as 28V.

When triggering the voltage value, you can simultaneously click the record button in the PC software to record charging data. These two operations can be performed in sync without interference.

UFCS Protocol

The steps for UFCS fast charging protocol value triggering are similar to those for the PD protocol. Clicking on it leads to the voltage value selection menu.

Click the appropriate voltage and current value for testing requirements; the left display area will show the current and voltage during adjustment.

Similarly, when triggering the voltage value, you can simultaneously click the record button in the PC software to record charging data. These two operations can be performed in sync without interference.

QC

For chargers supporting QC fast charging protocol, clicking on this option allows you to access the internal voltage value selection.

Once again, click the corresponding voltage value based on testing needs.

Similarly, when triggering the voltage value, you can simultaneously click the record button in the PC software to record charging data.

FCP

For chargers supporting FCP fast charging protocol, the steps are similar to those mentioned earlier. Click this option to access the internal voltage value selection. Once again, click the corresponding voltage value based on testing needs.

SCP

For chargers supporting SCP fast charging protocol, adjust according to testing requirements.

AFC

For chargers supporting AFC fast charging protocol, clicking on this option allows you to access the internal voltage value selection. Once again, click the corresponding voltage value based on testing needs.

SFCP

For chargers supporting SFCP fast charging protocol, clicking on this option allows you to access the internal voltage value selection. Once again, click the corresponding voltage value based on testing needs.

First and foremost, it's important to note that when you don't select "be ready" at the charging protocol page, KM003C does not perform any simulation. It only receives PD data, so normal charging will not be affected. The cable simulation feature can be divided into the following three ways:

When the USB-C male plug is plugged into the charger, and the female receptacle is not in use, the male plug of the KM003C simulates a 50V 5A EPR cable, effectively functioning as a 50V 5A cable.

The captured protocol packet reveals a spec of 50V5A.

Then, when the USB-C male plug is plugged into the charger and the female receptacle is connected to another cable with an E-Marker chip (20V 5A), the simulation feature is not triggered, and the SOP1 data is provided by the cable directly.

The spec is now provided by this cable, at 20V 5A.

Finally, when the female receptacle is connected to the charger via this cable, and the USB-C male plug is not in use, no cable simulation occurs, and the SOP1 data is provided by the cable too.

Since there is no change of cable, the spec remains at 20V 5A.

If you're a fan of ChargerLAB, then you're probably aware that our most advanced tester, the ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C, is capable of many impressive functions. These functions include measuring voltage, current, power, capacity, and resistance of USB charging ports and cables. However, what you may not know is that it also supports a bi-directional current detection circuit. The tester detects bi-directional currents by selecting different current detection paths based on whether the device being tested is in a charging or discharging state, thus enabling accurate detection of the current. So, how can you achieve this? Let's delve into the details!

Bi-directional Current

To perform bi-directional current testing, you need a tester that has both USB Type-C male connector and female socket with input and output capabilities. The ChargerLab Power-Z KM003C is one such tester that can do the job with ease.

Unlike the USB-A port, a standard USB Type-C port does not output voltage when it is not in use. Therefore, a status signal is required to activate the 5V output voltage. By pressing and holding the button on the right-hand side of the POWER-Z KM003C, the pull-down resistor can be activated, which prompts the charger to output a 5V voltage, thus activating the tester.

However, for the USB-C female socket side of the POWER-Z KM003C tester, it only supports single-side activation. This is because the USB-C female socket has two CC wires for power supply, while the cable side also has two CC wires, but one of them needs to supply power to the E-marker chip, leaving only one wire available to power the tester. In this case, pressing and holding the button on the right side can activate the pull-down resistor and initiate the tester if you have correctly connected the USB-C female socket. If not, simply flip the connector and repeat the process before using it.

Practical Operation

In practice, we tested the Power-Z KM003C by connecting it between the output end of Xiaomi's 67W charger and the input end of the Redmi Note 11 Pro+. 

When the USB Type-C male connector of the POWER-Z KM003C tester was connected to the output end of the charger, the display showed a current of 3.133939A, with the direction of the current being "→". 

When the USB Type-C male connector of the tester was connected to the charging port of the phone, the display showed a current of 3.604725A, with the direction of the current being "←".

Nowadays, the power for smartphone charging can be up to 240W, but there's a misunderstanding among the non-geeks, that is, as long as you're using the built-in charger, you can get the maximum charging power. Well, we're here to prove them wrong - cable matters!

Introduction

First, let's introduce the equipment for the test.

The KM003C's screen size has increased from 1.3 to 1.54 inches, and four buttons on the side have also changed from golden to silver. Except for that, the UI color has become more vivid and dynamic.

Besides the tester, we also use the Lightning cable, iQOO 120W charger, Xiaomi 120W charger, Huawei 40W charger and their corresponding cables.

Tests

Next, we're going to test and charge with those cables.

Data Transmission

Use the POWER-Z KM003C to read the E-marker chip info of the Xiaomi dual USB-C cable. It shows that this is a USB 2.0 cable and supports 20V 5A.

Use the KM003C to read the E-marker chip info of the IQOO dual USB-C cable. It shows that this is also a USB 2.0 cable and supports 20V 5A.

Use the KM003C to read the E-marker chip info of the Huawei dual USB-C cable. It shows that this is yet another a USB 2.0 cable and supports 20V 5A.

Power Transmission

Using a knockoff Apple USB-C to Lightning cable to charge the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The power is 12.26W, which is far from the normal fast-charging power, and the phone will show a pop-up alert and charge intermittently.

Replace the cable with the original one. The power becomes 26.27W, which reaches the fast-charging power.

Using the iQOO 120W charger with a Huawei 6A cable to charge the iQOO Neo7, the power is 31.63W, which is far from the charging experience with the original charger kit.

Then, replace the Huawei cable with the IQOO one. The fast-charging UI can be shown correctly, and the power reaches 106.4W.

Using the Huawei 66W charger with a Xiaomi 10.5A cable to charge the Huawei Mate 40 Pro, the power is 24.3W, which is also far from the charging experience with the original charger kit.

Next, replace the Xiaomi cable with the Huawei one. The fast-charging UI can be shown correctly, and the power reaches 49.3W.

Using the Xiaomi 120W charger with a Huawei 6A cable to charge the Xiaomi 11 Pro, the power is 19.89W, which is also far from the charging experience with the original charger kit.

Finally, replace the Huawei cable with the Xiaomi one. The 67W MAX can be shown correctly, and the power reaches 39.5W.

Summary of ChargerLAB

The proprietary protocol such as the SUPERVOOC, FCP and FlashCharge can surely provide us with the fastest charging speed, but you always need the special cable for that. With the brand new POWER-Z KM003C, you can easily find out the power transmission capability for your cables and see if the charging power actually live up to the promise.

Application Page

First of all, go to the application page, and select the Modules option.

After that, you can see the USB-C eMarker option, which can detect the info of the cable with this chip.

Testing

The tester needs an external power supply when testing the protocol and E-marker chip, but it is found that the voltage will have a certain impact on the results during the actual test.

Firstly, we connect the tester to a charger that provides a voltage below 5.1V.

Then plug in the Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable and enter the USB-C eMarker page.

We can see that it does not detect the eMarker chip of the Thunderbolt 4 cable.

The test result of replacing the Apple MagSafe 3 cable is the same, so it's not because of cable damage.

Then replace the charger so that the voltage reaches 5.17V.

And test it again.
