How to Update

To update the firmware of ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C PD3.1 tester, you need to operate with the PC software.

After connecting the tester to PC software, you need to click the "Update Firmware" in the user interface.

If a firmware can be updated, there will be a prompt in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware." As the image above, the part in the red frame means that ChargerLAB has already launched the updated firmware at this time.

Then click on the "Chip Icon" in the red frame to update.

After clicking on it, the PC software will erase the old firmware and write the new one. The whole process is almost done in a blink of an eye, very convenient. 

And if you don't see anthing in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware," you can always click the big + icon above it to update. You can find all the firmware files from Google Drive.

Simply select the corresponding local firmware.

After that, click on the "Chip Icon" in the red frame to complete the update. That is easy, isn't it? Why not turn on your ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C and have a try?

Introduction

We all know that the ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C can detect various high-end cables with E-marker chips. But did you know that our classic KT002 can do the same, and it has an extra feature for OnePlus's Dash cable? Let's take a look.

E-marker Detection

First, it's recommended to turn on the PD switch at the bottom left.

Next, connect it to the power supply through the HID port (the other two USB-C ports work the same; this is just a demonstration), and then connect the high-spec cable you want to test. We're using a Thunderbolt 4 cable for this demo. For the specific operation, you need to push the top button to the left to enter the protocol trigger page, then select "E-mark Cable Reader."

As you can see, it correctly reads the cable as Thunderbolt 4 and USB4. Note that at this point, the other end of the cable should not be connected to any device.

Dash Cable Detection

To read Dash cable information, you need to return to the previously mentioned protocol trigger page and select "Misc Tools."

Then, enter the "Dash Cable Data Dump" option.

It can correctly read this cable and provide the corresponding detailed information.

Summary of ChargerLAB

In summary, the KT002 can generally read the E-marker chips and Dash cable information. However, it’s important to note that since the KT002 has been out for a long time, its E-marker information database is not as comprehensive as the KM003C. Therefore, if you have high requirements for this function, it’s still recommended to use the KM003C.

Introduction

Recently, many users have reported that their ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C does not work when powered on in certain situations, except for a flashing line at the edge. This indicates that the KM003C is in recovery mode. Today, we will provide a brief introduction and guide you on how to exit this mode.

Before we begin, it is advisable to understand or review the functions of each port and button for easier operation.

1 USB-C Male

Standard USB-C Male (Plug)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

2 USB-C Female

Standard USB-C Female (Receptacle)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

3 HID

Used to connect to PC & Power Supply and it’s driver-free.

PC software: support Windows / Mac OS (In development), used for upgrading firmware, drawing high-precision curves, loading offline curve files, PD protocol analyzer, triggering fast charging protocol, etc.

4 Back

1. Rotate the display direction in the main menu

2. Back 

3. Press and hold it when power off, you can enter the DFU mode

5 Confirm

1. Long press: Enter Settings

2. Short press: Confirm

6 Left

1. Switch four different interfaces in the main menu

2. Modify parameter values in the setting

3. Long press "Right" on startup when HID is disconnected to power (Flip the USB-C connector if it doesn't work)

Release CC pull-down resistor, it'll shut down after 5 seconds

Keep CC pull-down resistor, enter the charging protocol

Recovery Mode

The recovery mode is similar to the one on Android and iPhone devices; it is used to fix the tester when an update fails.

As shown in the gif, when you hold the back button while powering the tester, it will force the device into recovery mode. There are two solutions to this.

Method 1: Disconnect the KM003C, then plug it back into the charger after it has completely powered off. This should restore normal operation. If it doesn't exit recovery mode after re-plugging, use the following method.

Method 2: Connect to a computer via the HID port and use the PC software to recover.

Open the POWER-Z KM003C PC software on your computer, double-click your KM003C in the top left corner to enter the operation interface; then click "update firmware" on the right side and choose the latest firmware to upgrade. This completes the firmware upgrade.

At this point, the current upgrade progress will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the device. After the upgrade is complete, it will switch to the startup interface, indicating a successful recovery, and the device can be used normally.

Introduction

It's been a while since we launched our ChargerLAB POWER-Z KT002. While it's been a favorite among tech enthusiasts, we realized we haven't provided detailed tutorials. Let's jump in by introducing the protocol detection feature.

Since it has only one button - MultiKey, the operation is a bit complex, and we already divided it down into three sections in our pervious article of unboxing of the ChargerLAB POWER-Z KT002, you can go check it out.

First, when testing a USB-A charger, like this Huawei charger, simply connect its male plug directly to the tester.

Of course, you can also use a USB-A to USB-C cable to connect the KT002's USB-C port to the charger. This is more convenient because you don't have to tilt your head to see the test data.

You can also use a cable to connect a USB-C charger, but it has to be a dual USB-C cable.

Test

Once the KT002 and charger are connected, press the MultiKey to the left, select "Fastcharge Auto Enum," and press it again.

Then, you will get this note. It means you need to disconnect any device connected to other ports, because the high voltage may ruin your device.

After a short wait, it will end with a beep, and the results will be presented in the form of a checklist. Specifically, the supported protocols will be displayed in green, while the unsupported ones will be in red, making it very intuitive.

Now, let's switch to a USB-C charger. You can see this 1A2C GaN charger supports many protocols, covering most fast charging needs of current phones.

Here are the test results for a Nubia GaN USB-A charger.

Since it's a phone's original charger, this OnePlus WARP charger supports fewer protocols, making it less suitable for other devices.

Realme, a subsidiary of OPPO, has a SuperDart charger with similar support to OnePlus, but with an additional 65W SuperVOOC protocol.

Furthermore, it can detect less common protocols, like the PE+/PE+2.0 protocol of this Meizu charger.

Finally, let's test it on a power bank. Take this all-protocol power bank for example. Its USB-A port supports VOOC series protocols.

Introduction

Although our ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C cannot directly measure the exact power during wireless charging, it can provide a rough estimate. How does it do that? Today, we'll use MagSafe as an example to explain. Additionally, we plan to launch a new product by the end of 2024 that can accurately and precisely record wireless charging data. Stay tuned!

Test

Today, we will use the following devices: an Apple 15W MagSafe charger, an Apple 61W charger, and, of course, the POWER-Z KM003C.

First, connect the male plug of the KM003C to the USB-C port of the charger.

Then, connect the MagSafe charger to the output end.

Finally, connect it to the phone. You can see that the output power is 8.95V 2.11A 18.92W. Considering the loss in wireless charging, this is normal.

Record the Charging Data With PC (Online)

After installing the APP on the computer, connect the tester to the computer through the built-in HID port. After opening the APP, you will see the picture above. The red area shows the number of testers connected to the computer, and the yellow area shows the specific data changes detected by each tester.

Once opened, you can see the changes in charging data here. The top section shows specific values for voltage, current, and power, while the bottom section is the time axis for the charging curve. The right side is the operation interface.

In the red box, click the icon in the yellow box and the APP starts to record the charging data.

After that, you can see the voltage and current. By clicking the "POWER" option in the red box on the top toolbar, you can also see the power data, clearly and straightforwardly.

After recording, you can click this icon to perform more actions.

Here are all options.

Export

After clicking Export, the system will provide two file types.

You can choose the file starting with SQLite or CSV. We will introduce the CSV.

Open it to view the specific charging data.

Introduction

Over a year ago, we demonstrated how to use the ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C to record charging data online. While this method is the quickest, it requires a PC to do so. However, you can also record the data offline on the tester and import it to your PC later on. How can this be done? Today, we will show you.

Testing Steps

Using the POWER-Z KM003C to record data involves just three steps:

1. Connect the power source (power bank, charger, etc.).
2. Connect the load.
3. Create a new record.

For this test, we're going to use the following equipment: Anker PD3.1 140W power bank, P240 (as the load), and KM003C.

Step 1: Connect the Power Source

First, connect the male plug of the KM003C to the power bank.

Step 2: Connect the Load

Next, connect it to the load to start discharging.

Step 3: Create a New Record

Go to the data storage page and create a new data record.

Set any desired output voltage and current values on the P240 to record the data in real-time.

Import to PC

After completing the data recording, you need to use our POWER-Z PC software to import the data. This allows you to plot curves and facilitate data analysis.

Step 1: Connect the Software

Download the software on your computer, then connect the tester's HID port to the computer.

Once you open the app, you'll see the interface. You will also notice a green option box for KM003C on the left side, indicating a successful connection. Double-click to open it. The left area shows the number of testers connected to the computer, with a maximum of 32 devices.

Once opened, you can see the changes in charging data here. The top section shows specific values for voltage, current, and power, while the bottom section is the time axis for the charging curve. The right side is the operation interface.

Step 2: Import Data

Next, click the "Offline Data" option in the red box to import the data.

The latest data will be displayed at the bottom.

Double-click the data to view the detailed charging curve on your PC.

After that, you can click this icon to perform more actions.

Here are all options.

Export

After clicking Export, the system will provide two file types.

You can choose the file starting with SQLite or CSV. We mainly introduce the CSV.

Then, you can see the saved EXCEL file in the saved path.

Open it to view the specific charging data.

In addition to saving in CSV format, it can also be saved in a format beginning with SQLite, but this method is more complicated, we will only do a brief introduction.

The file name is called mySQL.db. You need a specific database management system called MySQL to open it. Those who are interested can download it by themselves.

How to Update

To update the firmware of ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C PD3.1 tester, you need to operate with the PC software.

After connecting the tester to PC software, you need to click the "Update Firmware" in the user interface.

If a firmware can be updated, there will be a prompt in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware." As the image above, the part in the red frame means that ChargerLAB has already launched the updated firmware at this time.

Then click on the "Chip Icon" in the red frame to update.

After clicking on it, the PC software will erase the old firmware and write the new one. The whole process is almost done in a blink of an eye, very convenient. 

And if you don't see anthing in the detailed operation interface of "Update Firmware," you can always click the big + icon above it to update. You can find all the firmware files from Google Drive.

Simply select the corresponding local firmware.

After that, click on the "Chip Icon" in the red frame to complete the update. That is easy, isn't it? Why not turn on your ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C and have a try?

Introduction

Today ChargerLAB will introduce the common functions of the POWER-Z KM003C, so that you can have a clearer understanding of this tester.

Let’s first take a look at the functions and uses of each port and button. Many users confuse the ports, making it impossible to test.

1. USB-C Male: Standard USB-C Male (Plug)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

2. USB-C Female: Standard USB-C Female (Receptacle)  that supports USB4 Gen3 (Bidirectional)

3. HID: Used to connect to PC & Power Supply and it’s driver-free.

PC software: support Window / Mac OS (In development), used for upgrading firmware, drawing high-precision curves, loading offline curve files, PD protocol analyzer, triggering fast charging protocol, etc.

4. Back: 

(1) Rotate the display direction in the main menu 

(2) Back 

(3) Press and hold it when power off, you can enter the DFU mode

5. Confirm button: 

(1) Long press: Enter Settings 

(2) Short press: Confirm

6. Left button: 

(1) Switch four different interfaces in the main menu 

(2) Modify parameter values in the setting

7. Right button: 

(1) Switch four different interfaces in the main menu 

(2) Modify parameter values in the setting 

(3) Long press "Right" on startup when HID is disconnected to power (Flip the USB-C connector if it doesn't work). Release CC pull-down resistor, it'll shut down after 5 seconds. Keep CC pull-down resistor, enter the charging protocol

First: Charging Info Test

Steps: Plug and play.

Here is the Dash Board. Voltage, current, and power are from top to bottom. The lower left corner shows the charging protocol that may be in use.

Short pressing the confirm button on this page can switch the refresh rate between 4sps, 15sps, 60sps, and 1Ksps.

Second: Real-time Charging Curve

Steps: press the Right button to go to the Real-time Curve.

You can observe real-time data curves here. Press the Confirm button to switch between VBUS/IBUS, D+/D-, CC1/CC2.

Third: Protocol Test

After entering the "Charging protocol", select "Be ready!", and then select "Auto detection". The tester will read the information of the tested charger. It can support FCP, SCP, AFC, QC3.0, QC4+, QC5, PD3.1, PD3.0, PPS, Apple2.4A, VOOC, SVOOC, VIFC, UFCS, etc.

Warning: Please disconnect any device connected to another port before using this function, the high voltage may burn your device.

Fourth: Cable Simulation 

Another interesting function inside the "Charging protocol" is that you can simulate different cables. Select the button to the right of "Be ready!". 

Then you can choose the cable specifications you want to simulate. It can help you test protocols even if you don't have the corresponding cables.

Fifth: Protocol Trigger

Steps: "Application"-"Charging protocol"

This feature can trigger the needed protocol and adjust to a specific voltage. For this specific feature, it supports PD2.0, PPS, EPR, QC2.0, QC3.0, AFC, FCP, SCP, VIFC, UFCS, and VOOC protocols. The original cable is required when triggering the VOOC/SVOOC protocol, and the KM002C needs to be equipped with a small load.

Warning: Please disconnect any device connected to another port before using this function, the high voltage may burn your device.

Sixth: VBUS Ripple Test

Steps: "Application"-"Modules"-"VBUS Ripple"

It can detect VBUS ripple. Use the "Left" and "Right" buttons to switch the sample rate between 20.0k 1250μs to 8.0M 3μs.

Seventh: E-marker Cable Test

Steps: "Application"-"Modules"-"USB-C eMarker"

It can test if your USB-C cable has an E-marker chip. By reading the E-marker chip information inside the cable, you can obtain the maximum power, transfer speed, and other information.

Eighth: Apple Charger SN Code Reading

Steps: "Application"-"Modules"-"Apple charger"

Each Apple charger has its own SN code. Specifically, if the SN codes are consistent in the charger, cable, and port, then it is an official Apple product.

Ninth: Data Storage

Steps: Press the Left button to go to the Data Storage page, and press the Confirm button.

It can independently record data and store it inside. You can view data and export it as a chart in the PC Software.

Tenth: The PC Software

The PC software is very powerful. It includes data reading, recording, and exporting, as well as protocol trigger, adjusting voltage, PD protocol test, updating the firmware of the tester, and other functions. It can connect multiple testers at once, theoretically, there is no limit on the number. The PC Software supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and will be adapted to MAC in the future for everyone to use.

Introduction

About a year ago, we released our most powerful tester ever - ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C. However, what new fans may not know is that we also sell another tester on Amazon with a completely different style - KT002. It shares most features of KM003C but focuses on USB-A devices and is much cheaper, priced at $69.99.

What's more, it even got a limited-time discount, priced at only $49.99, with a limited quantity available. So, today, we will do a simple unboxing and introduce how to use it.

Product Appearance

The packaging box follows the classic blue and white design of POWER-Z.

The top of the back has a red background color to match KT002's color scheme. The most significant difference from KM003C is that its supported range dropped to 0-24V and 0-6A. And it supports PD3.0/2.0, PPS, QC4+, QC3.0/2.0, FCP, SCP, SSCP, AFC, VOOC, SuperVOOC, DASH, Warp, Apple 2.4A, DCP fast charging protocols, but it does not support the latest PD3.1 and QC5.

And it only contains the tester itself.

It got a 1.8 inch TFT display that supports gravity rotation. As mentioned earlier, its top and bottom are USB-A male and female connectors, respectively. In addition, the green sticker on the screen's edge is part of a screen protector, which we have secured between the screen and display for better protection. We strongly recommend keeping it that way.

Flip to the back. There are many ports here, and we have labeled the purpose of most of them. It's important to note that the PD toggle switch in the bottom left corner is for the PD triggering feature. After use, you should switch it back to the "OFF" to avoid interfering with normal communication between the charger and the phone.

It consists of three PCB layers, with four metal pillars used to hold them together, giving it a geeky appearance. Additionally, its HID port is different from KM003C; it's a MicroUSB port, so make sure you have the right cable for the job.

The length of the tester is about 56.5mm (2.22 inches).

After adding the USB-A connector, the length becomes 69.7mm (2.74 inches).

The width is about 34.7mm (1.37 inches).

The height is about 9.9mm (0.39 inches).

And the weight is 25.2g (0.89 oz).

Compared to KM003C, the most obvious advantage of KT002 in terms of appearance is its larger screen, making it easier to read the test data.

UI & How to Use

In addition to basic appearance and specs info, the most important aspects are the UI and how to operate the tester. Let's take a look.

Short Press

Since it has only one button - MultiKey, the operation is a bit complex, and we will break it down into three sections. First is the short press.

When plugged in, you'll see the first home page, which includes things like voltage, current, energy, and the elapsed time.

A short press on the top MultiKey will take you to the second page, which adds D+, D-, real-time power, and more detailed voltage and current info.

If you don't need so much detailed data, the next page will do the trick with only the basic info - voltage, current, power, and internal temperature.

Since this button is dial-shaped, you can also push it left and right. When pushed to the left, you will enter the protocol trigger page, including manually trigger protocol (Fastcharge Trigger), automatically trigger all protocols (Fastcharge Auto Enum), and other tools. In this mode, pushing the dial left and right becomes vertical navigation, and double-clicking returns to the home page.

Pushing to the right takes you to the module page. However, for the time being, this feature is not officially available for purchase.

Long Press (About One Second)

When you long press the button for a second, you enter the settings page, where you can set the tester's time, sound, language, developer tools, and factory reset, among other options.

Pushing to the left for a second allows you to enter the storage page, where you can run Lua scripts, format storage, and perform other functions.

Pushing to the right for a second takes you to the standby screen, where you can check the date, time, and internal temperature. If the tester is left idle for a long time, it will also go to this screen. In fact, you can think of this feature as a fun electronic calendar or the standby mode on the iPhone, as it has very low power consumption.

Double Press

Finally, a double press allows you to observe the real-time data curve of VBUS/IBUS, just like the KM003C.

In this mode, a long press can also switch to D+/D-.

Test

Power Test

Next, we will perform some simple tests, starting with basic power testing.

For a USB-A charger, like the Xiaomi 120W charger, you can simply use a USB-A to USB-C cable to charge the iPhone 15 Plus. The tester shows a power output of 26.5W. But what if you need to test a USB-C charger?

That's when the two USB-C ports come into play. With two USB-C cables, it can also test the power. And the power is around 26W with PD protocol.

And you can use it to test the MacBook Pro. The power can reach 93W. By the way, the cable above is used to connect to the computer.

Just like KM003C, it also comes with a dedicated PC software - POWER-Z KT TOOLBOX; you can use it to observe and record test data intuitively.

Protocol Test

Next, let's take this AOHi charger as an example. You will find the "Fastcharge Auto Enum" option on the protocol trigger page, as we mentioned before.

After selecting that, you will get this note. It basically means you need to disconnect any device connected to other ports, because the high voltage may burn your device.

After a short wait, it will end with a beep, and the results will be presented in the form of a checklist. Specifically, the supported protocols will be displayed in green, while the unsupported ones will be in red, making it very intuitive. Since we are connected to its USB-A port, the supported protocols are QC3.0, QC2.0, AFC, FCP, SCP, MTK-PE, Samsung 5V2A and DCP.

After switching to the USB-C port, you can see that it can detect PD protocols, specifically PD 3.0 and PPS.

Summary of ChargerLAB

In summary, KT002 can be seen as a mid-range tester focused on USB-A devices. While it lacks support for the latest protocols such as PD3.1 and doesn't offer the same measurement precision as KM003C; It has a larger screen and comes at a lower price, especially when you consider that its price has been reduced from $69.99 to $49.99 now. If you have many USB-A devices or are on a tighter budget, the KT002 is definitely worth considering.
