Bosch to End "Charge My EV" Charging Service by March 2025 Due to Market Challenges https://www.chargerlab.com/bosch-to-end-charge-my-ev-charging-service-by-march-2025-due-to-market-challenges/ https://www.chargerlab.com/bosch-to-end-charge-my-ev-charging-service-by-march-2025-due-to-market-challenges/#respond Tue, 25 Feb 2025 12:30:38 +0000 https://www.chargerlab.com/?p=34318

Bosch has announced that it will discontinue its "Charge My EV" charging service by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The company informed its customers via email, stating that the service will cease on March 31, 2025. Bosch highlighted the highly competitive market and slower-than-expected growth as the reasons behind the decision to exit the charging services sector. As a result, all user contracts for the 'Charge My EV' app will be terminated on that date.

Bosch to End

From April 1, 2025, customers will no longer be able to access the charging service, meaning they will be unable to log in, charge, or pay for any services, and their data will no longer be accessible. Additionally, RFID charging cards will be deactivated. Bosch also confirmed that users' personal data would be deleted within two months, unless it is needed for legal retention requirements, such as invoicing and accounting purposes.

Bosch to End

Bosch had entered into a charging partnership with Lotus, the Geely-owned electric vehicle brand, in January 2024. This collaboration granted Lotus customers access to over 600,000 public charging stations across Europe. Bosch had also partnered with Maserati, part of Stellantis, in 2023. With the discontinuation of the 'Charge My EV' service, these partners will likely need to find alternative charging providers.

Bosch to End

The move to discontinue the service comes amid broader restructuring efforts by Bosch. In November 2024, the company announced plans to cut 5,500 jobs globally, with significant reductions in areas such as assistance systems, autonomous driving, and production of electric motors. While these plans are still in progress, Bosch's decision to scale back operations aligns with its focus on more profitable and strategic business areas.

Introduction

In the early hours of February 20th Eastern Standard Time (EST), Apple unveiled its long-awaited entry-level model. Contrary to previous speculations of it being named the iPhone SE4, Apple has designated this device as the iPhone 16e. Similar to the iPhone 16 series, it is equipped with the A18 chip, though with a reduced GPU specification. Notably, Apple has removed the MagSafe magnetic feature from the iPhone 16e. Let's delve into how Apple has showcased its meticulous design choices.

iPhone 16e Eliminates MagSafe Magnetic Feature

iPhone 16e: Apple Scales Back MagSafe and Other Features in Its New Entry-Level Model-Chargerlab

The iPhone 16e features a 6.1-inch 60Hz notch display with Face ID support and is powered by the A18 processor. It measures 7.8mm in thickness and weighs 167g. A standout aspect is the debut of Apple's self-developed C1 5G modem, likely paving the way for the iPhone 17 series. In recent years, iPhone models have faced criticism over signal issues, prompting Apple to develop its own modem to address these concerns.

iPhone 16e: Apple Scales Back MagSafe and Other Features in Its New Entry-Level Model-Chargerlab

In terms of color options, the iPhone 16e is available only in black and white, offering fewer choices compared to the standard and Pro models. Due to its notch display design, the iPhone 16e does not support the Dynamic Island feature.

iPhone 16e: Apple Scales Back MagSafe and Other Features in Its New Entry-Level Model-Chargerlab

The A18 processor in the iPhone 16e has a downgraded GPU with one less core. Additionally, the device's buttons lack camera control functions. It comes with a single rear camera, lacks a macro mode, and does not support spatial photos or videos.

iPhone 16e: Apple Scales Back MagSafe and Other Features in Its New Entry-Level Model-Chargerlab

Perhaps the most significant change is in wireless charging capabilities. Unlike the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e does not support MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging, limiting it to 7.5W Qi standard charging. This move might benefit phone case manufacturers, as users would need magnetic cases to achieve similar wireless charging functionality. Pricing starts at $599 for the 128GB model, $699 for the 256GB version, and $899 for the 512GB variant. As an entry-level model, the storage options seem quite expensive.

iPhone 16e: Apple Scales Back MagSafe and Other Features in Its New Entry-Level Model-Chargerlab

The iPhone 16e adopts a USB-C port and supports 20W wired charging. Its battery life has been improved compared to the standard iPhone 16.

iPhone 16e: Apple Scales Back MagSafe and Other Features in Its New Entry-Level Model-Chargerlab

However, the iPhone 16e does not support WiFi 7 and lacks the second-generation Ultra-Wideband (UWB) feature.

Summary of ChargerLAB

The iPhone 16e's omission of the MagSafe magnetic feature and limitation to 7.5W Qi wireless charging is indeed unexpected. Users wishing to enjoy the convenience of Apple's magnetic accessory ecosystem will need to invest in magnetic cases, presenting an opportunity for case manufacturers. Overall, when compared to the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e's specifications and pricing may not offer significant value for money.

Introduction

Traditional flyback architectures can no longer meet the requirements of high switching frequency, high power density, and high efficiency for high-power adapters. As a result, the LLC architecture, better suited for higher power outputs, has been introduced into 100W+ high-power adapters. This effectively improves conversion efficiency, reduces size, enhances portability, and increases product competitiveness.

Additionally, due to the use of large-capacity filter capacitors in rectified switching power supplies, which exhibit capacitive loads, significant high-order harmonics are generated during the charging and discharging processes, causing pollution and interference in the power grid. To address this, engineers have begun incorporating PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuits into switching power supplies. For power supplies exceeding 75-85W, PFC circuits are mandatory to improve the power factor and correct load characteristics.

In response to the current trends of high efficiency and miniaturization in adapters, MPS has introduced a range of PFC+LLC combo controllers to help manufacturers significantly enhance product integration. Recently, ChargerLab identified multiple devices equipped with MPS PFC+LLC controllers. The following article will provide a detailed introduction.
