Renesas RAA489400: Versatile USB Type-C Controller Empowering High-Power Devices

Renesas Electronics has unveiled the RAA489400, a cutting-edge USB Type-C® Port Controller tailored for applications demanding high power, precision, and advanced connectivity. This compact yet powerful controller is built to comply with USB Type-C Release 2.1 and USB Power Delivery Revision 3.1, including Extended Power Range (EPR) capabilities that deliver up to 240W at 48V. It is designed to address the growing needs of modern devices requiring seamless power delivery and efficient operation.

At its core, the RAA489400 integrates a highly efficient power management system. It supports both VBUS source and sink operations with bidirectional gate drivers for external N-channel MOSFETs, ensuring smooth and reliable power transitions. Its comprehensive protection features include overvoltage, Undervoltage, and reverse voltage safeguards for both VBUS and VCONN, as well as overcurrent protection with configurable thresholds. These mechanisms enhance the safety and reliability of devices operating under demanding conditions.

The RAA489400 also boasts remarkable versatility through its integration of SMBus/I2C interfaces. Additionally, its support for dual-role power (DRP) makes it an ideal choice for dynamic applications like notebooks, drones, and power banks, where devices must alternate between power sourcing and sinking roles.

Renesas’s advanced engineering shines through the RAA489400’s innovative features. The controller supports fast role swap (FRS) for instantaneous transitions between power roles and includes internal VBUS discharge paths for added safety. Its integrated ADC allows precise monitoring of VBUS voltage and current, enabling real-time power optimization. Furthermore, its compact 32-pin 3x5mm FCQFN package ensures space efficiency for integration into modern, space-constrained designs.

  • High Voltage Tolerance: The RAA489400 supports an absolute maximum rating of 60V for VBUS monitoring and Configuration Channels (CC1/CC2). This makes it ideal for devices operating in high-power environments.
  • Enhanced Power Management: Equipped with VBUS source and sink path gate drivers, the device enables efficient bidirectional power flow. It includes integrated overvoltage, undervoltage, and reverse voltage protections for both VBUS and VCONN paths.
